Treaty interpretation is the work of international lawyers. It is a core skill and this program will sharpen your skill. Leading experts will walk you through the goals, principles and challenges of treaty interpretation in a plenary session. Participants will then have the opportunity in a smaller working group to tackle interpretation in one of several pressing areas: human rights and the challenges of diplomatic immunity, private international law, and national security exceptions in trade and investment agreements.

This massive infrastructure development includes physical entities such as railways, bridges, roads, etc., as well as digital. There is also a geopolitical side to the ambitious economic expansion of China’s “reach” as it seeks to solidify its own supply chains and economically dependent countries in what Beijing perceives as a post-American world.

2021 Miami Annual Meeting

The International Law Section will bring an in-person world class international law meeting to Miami, FL for the first time since October 2019. The Meeting will identify critical emerging issues; highlight the international legal work being done around the world; and introduce the firms doing that work to the members of the ABA International Law Section and larger international legal community.

Our Programs

The Section hosts a two signature Seasonal events per year, the Annual Meeting and the Fall Conference. The seasons events include two or three days of CLE and Non-CLE programming, various receptions and events and attract between 500 and 1,000 participants from over 50 countries. The Section also hosts several standalone programs that differ from Seasonal Meetings that are 1-2 days in length, are held in-person or virtually with a smaller number of participants.

Our Section’s members are spread across over 100 countries, yet our work is conducted with a sense of close community across boundaries of all kinds. Our members find leadership opportunities and visibility in our more than sixty committees (some focused on specific subject matters, others on a geography or other affinity) and our growing number of active city chapters.
